If your house in on a residential area, your roof would have a somewhat steeper or sharper incline with respect to the ground. Roofs that are more or less parallel to the ground are often found in buildings that are commercial or industrial in nature.

Roofs in residential houses are usually made of asphalt shingles, but some still use glass, aluminum, straw, or concrete. We live in a world where people are no longer willing to spend an arm and a leg for the roof they put over their heads. This is the reason why the popularity of asphalt as the roofing material of choice increased, because of slate shingles’ limitations. Asphalt shingles may not last for generations, but they usually last for 50 years without needing any repair. Likewise, repair kits and patching materials for use in asphalt roofs are generally more cheaper than that of slate shingles.

You can find asphalt shingles in three grades: 30-, 40-, and 50-year dimensional.

Obviously, the 50-year dimensional is more expensive than either the 40- or the 30-year dimensional. On top of the life expectancy that the different grades the asphalt shingles can give you, there is the difference in the quality of their aesthetics. People note that a 50-year shingle gives a more astute appearance compared to a 30- or 40-year grade.

A 30-year shingle that is correctly installed will last about 25 years without any need of major repair. 30-year shingles are not made as thick as 40- or 50-year shingles, and not with as much asphalt.

Likewise, 40-year shingles will give you good protection from the elements for 30 years without any major concern. The 40-year dimension contains more than 60% asphalt compared to the 30-year and is therefore cheaper per unit price and durability.

Both 40- and 50-year dimension can give you the same 30 years of good service. 50-year dimensions are made with more asphalt, not for more durability, but for better aesthetic look.
